PREPARE FOR YOUR COMMITTEE
Preparation
Intense and thorough preparation is the key to a successful EMERGE ZAMBIA MODEL UNITED NATIONS (EMERGE ZAMBIA) conference experience. All delegates should familiarize themselves with EMERGE ZMUN rules and procedures, which follow the THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) framework. Reading the information on this page will provide answers to most of your questions.
For all aspects related to Committees, Topics, Country Assignments, and Hotel Room Bookings, please refer to the instructions on our website and those provided by our Under-Secretary-General for Academic Affairs & the Director of Simulation Initiatives at EMERGE-ZAMBIA.
EMERGE ZAMBIA Policy on Resolutions
EMERGE ZAMBIA follows THIMUN procedures, meaning resolutions are developed during the committee sessions through diplomatic negotiations and consensus-building. Pre-written resolutions are not accepted.
Delegates should refrain from discussing committee topics with other delegations until their first committee session to ensure a fair and balanced debate.
Useful Research Materials
The resources listed below serve as a starting point for your research. Delegates are encouraged to make extensive use of academic books, newspaper articles, scholarly journals, and official reports from UN agencies, affiliated Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and other International or Regional Organizations such as the World Bank, WHO, FAO, and UNESCO. Delegates should carefully evaluate online sources and use only reputable materials. Faculty Advisors and Librarians can provide invaluable guidance and support.
Background Guides
Delegates will receive all committee Background Guides in due time to finalize their research and preparation. Failure to follow the guidelines may result in evaluation points being deducted.
Position Papers
Each committee topic should be addressed in a succinct policy statement known as a Position Paper, representing the official stance of your assigned country. Delegates must identify and analyze international and regional conventions, treaties, declarations, resolutions, and programs of action relevant to their country's policy. Recommendations for committee action should be included.
Format Guidelines
- Maximum two pages in length.
- Margins must be 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides.
- Font must be Arial, size 10 pt.
- Text must be justified for uniform alignment.
- Country name and Committee name must be clearly labeled on the first page.
- Agenda topics must be clearly labeled in separate sections.
- National symbols (headers, flags, etc.) are not allowed.
- Maximum 750 words per topic (for single-topic committees, the limit is 1,500 words).
Use the PDF template provided to type your position paper, then save the file before submission. Free programs such as Adobe Reader or Microsoft Edge can be used for this purpose.
Submission Guidelines
- Submit one position paper per country per committee (if two delegates are assigned to the same country in one committee, they must submit a joint paper).
- The Position Paper must cover all topics in the committee's Background Guide—do not submit separate papers for each topic.
- Do not submit position papers for committees that your country has not been assigned to.
EMERGE ZAMBIA does not require citations in position papers as in academic research papers. However, if you use direct quotes from UN documents or reports, they must be placed in quotation marks with informal acknowledgment of the source.
Plagiarism Policy
All position papers must be entirely original. Delegates must develop their own ideas and policy recommendations based on research and present them in their own words. EMERGE ZAMBIA does not tolerate plagiarism, including copying from background guides or past UN documents. While UN materials are in the public domain, verbatim re-creation is not allowed. Violators may face disqualification from the conference.
Position Paper Submission
Detailed instructions for submitting position papers will be provided by the USG for Academic Affairs & the Director of Simulation Initiatives at EMERGE-ZAMBIA.
📩 Position papers must be sent to the email provided in the country and committee assignment email.
⚠ Position papers sent to operational email accounts (e.g., info@emerge-heos.org) will NOT be considered.
